A 2.5-hour delay—so one dog could live
When the dog began to tremble midair, no one knew what was coming. But soon, the captain’s voice echoed through the cabin: “We’re making an emergency landing… for a dog.”
John held Cooper tightly as his dog’s body went limp mid-flight.
He was helpless.
Until a voice came on the intercom: “Is there a veterinarian onboard?”
A moment later, the pilot announced a diversion to Minneapolis.
For a four-legged passenger.
John and his dog Cooper were flying Delta Flight 694 from Detroit to Los Angeles. For Cooper, it was his first time flying—and the most important: he was accompanying John to visit his aging parents in California.
About halfway into the flight, Cooper began trembling.
His breaths became shallow. He lay still, eyes dull. John frantically flagged a flight attendant.
The flight crew responded instantly.
“Is there a veterinarian onboard?” one attendant called out.
A woman raised her hand—Dr. Laura Henderson, a veterinarian of 17 years. She quickly assessed Cooper. “He needs medical help,” she told the crew. “We have to land.”
The pilot soon addressed the cabin: “We’re diverting to Minneapolis for a canine medical emergency.”
The aircraft turned, descending toward Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport, where a veterinary medical team was already alerted and standing by.
When they landed, Cooper was rushed to a nearby emergency vet hospital.
The diagnosis: hypoglycemia-induced respiratory distress, triggered by anxiety and cabin pressure changes. Without treatment, it could have been fatal.
Because of swift action and expert care, Cooper survived.
While the unscheduled landing caused a 2.5-hour delay, not a single passenger complained.
One said, “We can all miss a meeting—but this dog didn’t have time. Delta made the right call.”
The story quickly spread online, earning praise for Delta Air Lines and reminding the world of one powerful truth: compassion doesn’t stop at species.
John, teary-eyed, later shared: “I thought I was going to lose him. But thanks to one vet, one brave crew, and an airline that cares… I didn’t.”
Cooper is now recovering, enjoying treats, soft blankets, and belly rubs—and he has one more adventure to look forward to: getting home.
