rom a Cardboard Box to a New Beginning
Who would’ve thought a cardboard box could carry an entire future?
That morning, I pulled over to take a phone call. I didn’t expect my heart to be caught by a pair of tiny eyes peeking out from the passenger seat.
A small kitten, no older than a few weeks, sat in an empty waffle box. His paws rested on the edge like he was clinging to the last piece of hope he had. His wide eyes were filled with curiosity—and something else: a silent question.
“Can I come with you?”
No collar. No name. Just soft ginger fur and the quiet dignity of a soul waiting to be seen.
I didn’t know who left him there. But I knew I couldn’t leave him behind.
I started the car. He didn’t flinch. He just sat there, watching the world go by, as if he somehow understood: his life had just changed.
But would this ride really lead him home—or just to another stop along the way?
When we got home, the sky was turning orange.
I placed the box on the floor and opened the top. He didn’t bolt. He stepped out slowly, sniffing the rug, the couch, the corners—taking it all in.
That night he slept in the box. The next night, beside my bed. By the third, he curled up on my lap and stayed there.
I named him Waffle—a sweet reminder of the beginning, and all the love that followed.
Now, every morning he waits while I make coffee. Every evening he greets me with purrs and head nudges. His eyes no longer ask, “Will I be okay?”
They say, “I’m home.”
