The Senior Cat Who Refused to Open Her Eyes—Until We Brought Her Home

Can you imagine this? She spent nearly a month at the shelter with her eyes tightly shut, curled in a corner, refusing the world.

Today, we brought her home.

We don’t know what the future holds. But we know she deserves the chance to start again.

She’s 8 years old. A “senior” by adoption standards. According to the shelter, her owner had her since kittenhood, only to surrender her unexpectedly.

She isn’t sick. She isn’t injured. But she is, without a doubt, heartbroken.

For almost a month, she stayed curled in a corner of her shelter cage, eyes closed, like she was trying to disappear. Shelter staff said she hadn’t really interacted with anyone since she arrived. They called it “abandonment depression.”

And with her eyes shut, she shut the world out.

Last summer, we lost our own senior kitty—16 years old and full of quiet wisdom. Since then, the house has felt strangely empty, like something essential was missing. When we saw her photo online, something clicked. We didn’t need another kitten.

We needed her.

And maybe, just maybe—she needed us.

We brought her home today. We set up a quiet room just for her, filled with cozy blankets, soft light, and gentle silence. Right now, she’s hiding under the dresser.

We haven’t pushed. Her food and water are nearby. We’re waiting. Patiently.

She doesn’t have a name yet. But we know she’ll earn one, once she’s ready to lift her head, open her eyes, and trust again.

We’re also looking into calming aids. Feliway didn’t help us much in the past, so we’re open to new ideas—calming treats, flower essences, acupuncture for pets—anything gentle to help guide her back to herself.

If you have suggestions—or a name that feels right for a quiet, weary soul learning to love again—please share.

Because sometimes, what a broken heart needs most… is someone willing to wait while it heals.
